Improvement of Media and Information Literacy Skills
Are you tempted to click on a link promising you a chance to win a million? Do you find it hard to resist the prospect of receiving an inheritance from an Arab prince or a wealthy American? Do you ever receive unexpected court summons or police fines? Are you ever unsure where a package came from? A librarian can help you recognise false information and scammers, and navigate the ocean of information safely.
The Šilalė Public Library and Internet Reading Room are organising FREE lessons for improving media and information literacy skills (MIRKT) for both adults and students.
INDIVIDUAL MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY CONSULTATIONS
Every day, the Communication and Innovation Department invites you to consult with them on various media and digital literacy issues:
- how to use a computer or a smart device;
- how to install a smart app or save a new contact;
- how to send photos;
- ...and anything else you need to know to browse the internet safely and effectively!
Who are the lessons for? Anyone who wants to learn!
The lesson lasts one hour.
FOR BEGINNERS: MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY
These lessons will help you to develop general media and information literacy (MIRKT) skills, as well as teaching you:
- how to use a computer, a tablet or a phone;
- how to use the MS Office Word text processing program;
- how to save information to a USB drive;
- how to browse the internet safely;
- how to create and use an email account safely;
- how to send emails and attach files using a phone or a computer;
- what is important for communicating safely with family and friends online;
- how to register with a doctor online;
- how to read the latest news on news websites;
- how to select and critically evaluate information presented on the internet;
- how to use leisure services;
- what is Google Drive cloud storage and what it can do;
- what are the basic rules for safer internet use;
Who are the lessons for? Anyone who wants to learn!
The lessons last 15 hours (the schedule is decided in advance).
FOR BEGINNERS: LEARN HOW TO USE A COMPUTER
The lessons will help you develop general media and information literacy (MIRKT) skills, as well as equipping you with practical skills. You will learn:
- what types of digital devices there are;
- what are the main computer input and output devices;
- what the symbols on a computer keyboard mean;
- how to turn a computer on and off properly;
- what are desktop icons;
- how to operate Windows using a mouse;
- how to use various menu bars effectively;
- how to correctly use the help guide;
- how to perform actions with various files and folders;
- how to use text editing software;
- how to work with a digital document:
- how to write and copy text;
- how to edit fonts;
- how to use the spell checker;
- how to insert and format images and tables;
- how to print a prepared document;

The lessons last 7 hours (the schedule is decided in advance).
FOR BEGINNERS: ONLINE LEISURE SERVICES
The internet is not only for sharing information and communicating, but it's also for entertainment! This lesson will help you develop general media and information literacy (MIRKT) skills, as well as equip you with practical skills. You will learn:
- what are online entertainment services;
- how to use them safely;
- how to find information about events online;
- how to use digital maps;
- how to create digital routes;
- how to safely purchase public transport tickets;
Who are the lessons for? Anyone who wants to learn!
The lesson lasts 1 hour 30 minutes.
FOR STUDENTS: PROTECTING YOUR PRIVACY AND PERSONAL DATA ONLINE
This lesson will help students develop their general media and information literacy (MIRKT) skills, teaching them how to:
- use social medias safely;
- protect their smart devices from viruses;
- protect themselves from online fraudsters;
- create a secure password;
- identify safe and unsafe online games;
Who are the lessons for? Year 4–6 students.
HOW TO USE DATABASES AND INFORMATION RESOURCES?
Digital databases provide access to a variety of useful information sources, offering reliable information for research, study or personal use. This lesson will develop your general media and information literacy (MIRKT) skills, teaching you:
- what an information search strategy is and how to create one;
- how to use information resources effectively;
- how to use the resources available in the library;
- how to use foreign and Lithuanian information databases;
- how to use article search systems;
- how to use scientific information search resources;
- how to critically evaluate the information found;
Who are the lessons for? Anyone who wants to learn!
The lesson lasts 1 hour 30 minutes.
